How to find your Ideal Target Audience

This post will talk about how you can identify who is your Ideal Target Audience.

It’s important to recognize when creating your offers, services, and products that not everyone will want what you’re offering. You also don’t want to work with everyone because believe it or not it can become a great pain, even a nightmare when they are not the right fit.

Let’s get straight to the point, the truth is that your offers, services, and products are not for a general audience.

Oftentimes people are just not looking for what you have to offer.

If you ever had a client that makes you want to pull your hair out or a customer that refunds your product after a few days of purchasing – then they probably weren’t in your ideal target audience.

So how do you Identify your Ideal Target Audience? Well, the first thing that you would need to do is to find your specific market area otherwise known as your niche. The more specific your offer, products, or service is, the higher the potential of you getting the right customer.

Let’s take an eCommerce store selling shoes for example.

Everyone needs shoes so your store shouldn’t have problems selling shoes right? Well if you think about it, there are many other eCommerce stores that may be selling shoes. Therefore, why should a customer buy shoes from your store when they can buy those same shoes elsewhere with probably a better offer?

This is where niching down can be beneficial. Rather than having a shoe store selling shoes for everyone, it would be better to choose a specific industry. Now let’s revisit the eCommerce shoe example but with a focus on the healthcare industry.

Your potential customer base becomes smaller but you are no longer competing with 100s of other eCommerce stores that are selling shoes. We can even go further and niche down in the healthcare industry to sell shoes just for nurses.

Once you have found your niche, then you’ll need to start asking certain questions to create your Ideal Target Audience Avatar.

Questions like:

  • What is your ideal audience’s biggest problem?
  • How does your offer, service, or products solve their problem?
  • How can you grab their attention in a creative or unique way?

Let’s apply these questions to our eCommerce shoe store example.

What would be the biggest problem for a nurse in relation to shoes?

Well, nurses are busy people and are constantly on their feet. If they are wearing shoes that supports hours of walking around and standing this can lead to all sorts of issues like ankle sprains, back pain. shin splints just to name a few.

By answering what your ideal audience’s biggest problems are you have an idea of the next question.

How does your offer, service, or products solve their problem?

Unfortunately, just stating the obvious answers to your ideal audience’s problem won’t be enough. Why? Even though you niched down to a specific audience, other businesses may still have the same exact audience.

Now you may be asking then what’s the point? Why go through the trouble to be specific? Well, the thing is even though they have the same exact audience it’s still up to the audience to choose. And If they aren’t addressing the issues and just prompting them to buy now, they probably won’t make the sale.

This is why it’s good to always:

  • Say how your offer, service, or products are different.
  • How the benefits of your offer, service, or products solve each problem.
  • And provide solid social proof that your offer, service, or products work.

So now that you have identified your ideal target audience and you have solved their biggest problems, how can you grab their attention in a creative and unique way? Well, the best way to do so is to build a brand around your offer, service, or products (we’ll talk more about branding in a future post).
